2 in cop shooting charged

THE CITY Prosecution Office charged two men for allegedly trying to kill a police officer who arrested them in a buy-bust operation at Barangay Kinawiton, Babak District, Island Garden City of Samal on Step 17.

John Eric Capangpangan is charged for violation of Republic Act 9165 (Comprehensive Dangerous Drug Act of 2002), attempted murder with direct assault and violation of 10591 (Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Act); while Tristan Custodio is charged for violation of Presidential Decree 1829 (law penalizing obstruction of justice).

Prosecutor Jose Paolo Evangelista found probable cause to charge the suspects in a resolution dated Sept. 23.

Their case stemmed from the complaint filed by the police officer, name withheld because of the sensitivity of working undercover.

The police in his affidavit said that after he gave the buy-bust money to Capangpangan, he signaled the other police officers to arrest the suspect. But Capangpangan pulled out his firearm to shot him.

He then boarded a vehicle driven by Custodio but they were chased by the other law enforcers. They were cornered at Km. 12 Sagrada Familia in Sasa. Custodio went out of the vehicle and surrendered while Capangpangan tried to escape but he was arrested by the authorities. Several illegal drug paraphernalia, including the buy-bust money, were recovered from the possession of Capangpangan.
