11 Maute terrorists nabbed

ELEVEN suspected member of the Maute terrorist group were arrested by joint army troopers and police agents who also recovered a cache of high-powered weapons in Barangay Romagondong, Marogong, Lanao del Sur around 6 a.m. yesterday.

Government troopers seized a Nissan Terrano and cache of weapons that included one 60mm mortar, one M60 machine gun, one homemade Barret, one rocket propelled grenade (RPG), one M79 grenade launcher, one M16 rifle, one M-203 grenade launcher, one Garand rifle, one carbine, one calibre 22, two M14 rifles, numerous assorted explosive and ammunitions, and three handheld radios.

Capt. Arvin John Encinas, spokesperson of the 6th Infantry Division (ID), told TIMES yesterday that the terrorists were caught by surprise, and that there was not even a single shot fired by the soldiers and police officers during the operation.

“The timing was perfect. It was raining and the targets did not expect the troopers,” Encinas said.

Troopers of the 6th Infantry Battalion (IB) and the Criminal investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao conducted the operation in the area as they were serving a warrant of arrest against two members of Maute group members suspected in a murder case.

The Maute group has been tagged in the Roxas Night Market bombing that killed 15 people and injured 69 others last Sept. 2.

According to the report, the agents were armed with warrant for the arrest of Ali Kuton and Arnel Samo in Criminal Case no 2015-7632 for murder. Both were reportedly seen in the area prior to the raid.

The raiding team, however, chanced upon a group of person possessing high powered firearms in the targeted hideout.

Reports said the supposed targets were not among those arrested suspects whose identities were yet to be released.

The suspects were reportedly operating within the boundaries of Lanao del Sur and Maguindanao.

Maj. Gen. Arnel Dela, 6ID commander, lauded the troopers for the successful operation.
